Following my visit last month to the construction site of the Brooklands Health Centre, I was delighted to return and see the site of the Barratt Homes development.
The Fen Street development, once completed, will accommodate over 20,000 homes, 20% of which are social tenure. Currently 787 homes are occupied, 184 are social and 58 have been bought through their reduced cost scheme. Statistics have also revealed that 49% of the purchases so far, have been supported by the governments Help to Buy Scheme, giving buyers a foot on the first rung of the housing ladder.
The development has approximately 150 people working daily on site via their contractor network, providing skills in bricklaying, joinery, groundworks and plastering. The apprentices I met, spoke very highly of the programme and the how the “hands on” experience is invaluable outside the classroom.
Barratt Homes have to date, paid ￡19.98m in S106 contributions, providing the infrastructure such as roads and schools since it was initially launched in 2014.
