City MP Mark Lancaster has been playing a key role in helping steer through Parliament a new law aimed at making it illegal for the UK to continue to use cluster bombs in warfare.
The bombs normally used to destroy enemy tanks often to not initiate properly on contact with the ground and are thought to have been responsible for tens of thousands of civilian deaths around the world over the last four decades.
Mr Lancaster, who is also a qualified bomb disposal officer in the TA has been using his particular technical expertise in helping to ensure that no loopholes remain in the legislation.
After the second reading of the Bill in Parliament this week Mr Lancaster said;
“Having seen for myself during my service in Kosovo the death and destruction these bombs can bring to civilians, especially children I am determined to support this Bill and to make it as effective as possible.”
“With the final stages of the Bill coming before Parliament this week we are now in a race against time to get it passed before Parliament dissolves.”
