An MP has spoken out about the latest statistics highlighting the state of the city’s health.
Every year the NHS publishes its ‘health profile’ for each area based on factors such as illness, drug use, diet and even education and crime.
Mark Lancaster, member for Milton Keynes North, reviews the figures each year, and in fact has made health his number one priority.
This year the city is significantly better than the English average in terms of its deprivation, child poverty and statutorily homelessness.
However the number of physically active children, hip fractures in over-65s and GCSE attainment are significantly worse than the English average.
In its introduction the profile says: “There are health inequalities within Milton Keynes. Life expectancy for men living in the most deprived areas is nearly seven years lower than for men living in the least deprived areas. For women the gap is nearly four years.”
Mr Lancaster said: “I believe that statistics do not always tell the full story, but these health profiles give us a useful snapshot of our city’s health.
“It is great to see that things like winter deaths are far less common here than in other cities. However I am concerned to see that the rate of hip fractures in those aged over 65 is among the worst in the country. The variation in life expectancy is also worrying. I will continue to push for the healthcare that residents deserve.”
