The city’s MPs have met with bus bosses over the controversial changes to routes.

Iain Stewart and Mark Lancaster visited operator Arriva’s depot on Monday morning to find out what is being done to rectify the problems suffered by many users since the network’s overhaul.

Manager Paul Adcock explained that the company had been forced to change the timetables because half of the services were losing money.

Both MPs received an unprecedented number of complaints about the services after the changes were made on April 25.

Mr Stewart, who called an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on the issue, sought to ensure that the problems were addressed.

He was assured that from August 15 several services would be altered, while Mr Adcock said bus routes are not always set in stone.

Mr Lancaster, who was pushing for better connections to rural areas, pointed out that ‘constituent after constituent felt they had not been consulted’.

As a result, Mr Adcock said that Arriva had learnt lessons from the backlash and that they would change the way they consulted the public about future alterations.

Afterwards Mr Stewart said: “I found it a very constructive meeting and I’m hopeful that Arriva and Milton Keynes Council can agree to adjust the services. I look forward to working with Arriva in the longer term to make sure Milton Keynes has a bus service on which passengers can rely.”

Mr Lancaster added: “It is positive to see Arriva addressing the worst of the problems in the short term. I am also pleased they have pledged there will be a full consultation before any large-scale changes take place in the future.”
